NEW YOUTH MAKER SPACE AT THE LANCASTER SCIENCE FACTORY HOSTS
8 HANDS-ON SUMMER MAKER CAMPS!
LANCASTER, PA – The one-of-a-kind Youth Maker Space at the Lancaster Science Factory will offer 8 unique Maker Camps this summer for kids ranging from Kindergarten to 8th grade. The Maker Camps will run in addition to 20 weeks of Summer STEM Camps the Science Factory will host all summer long.
“Parents are excited to expose their children to meaningful, hands-on experiences in engineering design, robotics, and woodworking,” says Science Factory Executive Directory, Emily Landis. “This is a chance for kids to try new tools and technology in a fun, safe environment. The experience could spark a life-long interest and a future career. We’re able to offer all of these things because of the new Youth Maker Space, which opened this spring. ”
Each Maker Camp is a week-long intensive which is designed to fight the “summer slide” in STEM disciplines and be incredibly fun and engaging for kids. Maker Camps are led by the Lancaster Science Factory Maker Space Educator, Chris Blackmon. Chris has a Master’s Degree in Education from Temple University and has been part of the educational staff at the Lancaster Science Factory since 2015.
Maker Camps include Junk Drawer Engineering, which runs the week of June 10th – 14th. In this camp kids from 2nd – 8th grade will build and perfect contraptions like catapults and hydraulic arms from common, household objects. A second Junk Drawer Engineering camp will run the following week and feature building and design challenges that include electricity.
Beginner Woodworking will be offered the week of June 24th – 28th, where kids will learn about and use real wood shop tools to make several projects. Coding and Robotics, Level One will run July 8th – 12th , where kids in grades K-3 will be introduced to coding basics through “screen free” card and block games and then experiment with Scratch Junior coding challenges.
Scholarships are available for families in need. The Lancaster Science Factory actively seeks to make programming accessible to all young people in our community. Full Summer Camp information, including pricing, is available at www.LancasterScienceFactory.org/summercamps.
